Just got the Studio 3s this week in Shadow Grey, ordered directly from Apple. For reference, I"ve been using the ATH-M50s for quite some time along with a pair of RHA MA 750i headphones. I’ve also owned a number of different headphones over the years from brands like Koss, Grado, Shure, & Sennheiser. I would not consider myself an audiophile, but I appreciate listening to music from good headphones. I have not owned a pair of high end wireless headphones (although I do have some cheap bluetooth buds I use at the gym). I’ve been testing these using an iPhone 6s+ and Spotify Premium.With that said….here are my initial impressions:Connectivity: Whatever Apple is doing with the W1 chip is pretty impressive. The range on these are very good. I can leave my phone in the far end of my apartment, walk out, close the door, and walk 15-20 feet before the signal starts to break up. This is roughly 100 feet from my phone, through closed doors/walls. To be honest, that wireless range is on par with my wifi router. Pairing is a breeze, as is switching between various Apple devices. Also, no lag at all when watching YT vids with these (I’ve experienced this with other BT headphones).As far as charging with microUSB goes…personally I still have many accessories that still use microUSB and very few that use USB C, even in 2017. MicroUSB may be on it’s way out, but I think it’ll take a few more years. Lightning would have been nice, but eh….considering the battery life on these, I don’t see this being a deal breaker for me if I only have to charge it once a week.Noise Cancellation: I’ll be honest, I’m a little underwhelmed. When nothing playing and NC on, I’d give these a 3/10. You would probably be better off with 2 dollar earplugs. They do filter out noise and there is a bit of a cabin effect with NC, but I can definitely make out the sounds around me. It’s dampened, but present.When I play a podcast (with people talking), the noise around me is definitely less noticeable than if I was playing nothing all, but I can still hear a decent amount of noise around me, like the clink sound a cup makes when hitting a dish. That said, it does a pretty good job filtering out noises like fans and people talking (in real life). I would give the NC a 5/10 in this scenario.When I play music, the NC works pretty well. I might hear a few things here and there but overall the NC does a pretty good job of filtering out outside sound. I’d give it a 8/10 in this scenario. You might hear some loud distinct noises like a door slamming but overall it’s pretty good.Overall, I’d say the NC here is satisfactory, but definitely not great. If you want the best NC on the market, go for Bose.Sound Quality: Let’s be honest, Beats are notorious for having a monstrous low end. That said, I’ve been comparing these with my ATH-M50s & I’m having a hard time deciding which one I like more SQ wise. I have to say, these are pretty good headphones sound quality wise.The low end is definitely emphasized a bit on these headphones, but it is not overpowering by any means. The mids and highs are well represented here, IMO. If you like EDM, pop, or hip hop, these will be great headphones. Listening to the Notorious B.I.G. was a delight on these headphones. Trap music was LIT. On other genres of music, like rock, the Studio 3s perform pretty admirably. Vocals come through great and the overall sound profile is fun to listen to. I played some songs from The Strokes & Red Hot Chili Peppers and these performed admirably.If I have one nitpick, it’s that the sound stage is not great compared to open backed headphones. If you like orchestral music, classical music, or music with a lot of instrumentals, these will be ok, not great. If your #1 artist in your music library is Beethoven, these just might not be for you. These are called “Beats”, not “Soundstage”. And cmon, who wears open backed headphones in public?!?? Maybe I’ve just been spoiled from listening to Grados, heh.Last thing I should note - these get pretty darn loud for bluetooth headphones.Overall, while I wouldn’t call these a huge upgrade over my ATH-M50s in the sound quality department, I’m pretty happy with the sound quality on these. I would put these on par with the M50s. Sure, they’re more expensive but wireless/NC makes up for it IMO. Maybe I’m crazy? This is just one humble listener’s opinion, after all.Build Quality/Looks: Build quality wise, these seem really solid. Matte finishes, metal accents, and plush earcups. It’s hard to tell how these will hold up over time, but they seem well built.Looks wise, well they’re Beats. They’re a fashion statement (and there’s nothing wrong with that). IMO these are the best looking headphones on the market, but that’s just me. If I’m going to be wearing headphones in public, I’m going to prefer the look of the Beats over the Bose QC35s and Sony wh-1000xm2. Personally, I like how the matte finish gives it a more sophisticated look compared to the old glossy plastic. Shadow grey is FIRE with those gold accents. If you like functional New Balance runners & embrace the dad look, maybe the Bose look will appeal to you more. If you like Yeezys, you just might like the Beats look.Comfort: I have a pretty big head, and medium-ish sized ears. The clamping force is not too bad (plush earcups help a lot), and it’s reasonably comfortable. The sides of my ears touch the earcups, which do result in some fatigue over time (but again, not bad). You might have some fatigue wearing these after wearing these for a hour or two, but overall I think the comfort on these is fine.Battery life: Seems to be as advertised so far. 22 hours of battery life between charges is pretty good IMO.Overall, considering what is out there on the market from Bose and Sony for high end wireless headphones, I think these stack up really well. If anything changes, I’ll be sure to update my review.Edit: I"ve had these for close to 3 weeks now and overall I"d say I still feel the about the same as I did when I initially bought these. They"ve become my daily driver for headphones (other than workouts), and I"m happy with them. The NC has proven to be pretty good in certain situations, not so good in others. They did pretty well on flights (been flying a lot recently), except for one time where I had the window seat and I was right next to the jet engine (the jet engine noise did come through in this instance). Otherwise they were fine. I did test out the call quality with these and it was actually pretty great, my voice came through "loud and clear". Lastly, sound leakage has been pretty good, it"s impossible for people to tell what I"m listening to. I definitely recommend these.
